WASHINGTON , D.C. -- “Malcolm X said, “The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman.” The lack of high-level diplomatic intervention surrounding the tragic death of Shanquella Robinson is a reminder of this quote and has led to mobilization efforts on behalf of the Robinson family nationally,” says Attorney Sue-Ann Robinson.
It has been exactly 200 days since the video showing Shanquella Robinson being beaten by one of her six travel mates was captured on a cell phone camera, while audio of others laughing and taunting her is heard in the background. Supporters, Activist and Community Leaders will gather around the family of Shanquella Robinson on Malcolm X’s birthday on May 19, 2023, in Washington, D.C. That day will also mark the 200th day since the brutal beating and death of Shanquella Robinson in Cabo, Mexico.
Robinson was killed while vacationing in Mexico in October 2022. According to Mexican prosecutors, one of Robinson's travel mates was the direct aggressor in her death. Initially, travel mates of Robinson claimed that her cause of death was alcohol poisoning, but a video would later surface showing Shanquella being beaten on the morning of her death. A toxicology report taken by Mexican authorities the morning after her death revealed no drugs or alcohol in Shanquella's system.
The local FBI office in Charlotte met with the family of Shanquella Robinson and advised that, based on their autopsy, the available evidence does not support a federal prosecution.
Despite FBI officials having zero interest in pursuing anything further in the Shanquella Roibinson case, in what Attorney Robinson describes as "an obscene example of a lack of government transparency," the FBI refuses to turn over any investigatory documents to the Robinson family.
Attorney Robinson released the following statement:
"The FBI has not released any documents to the family at all . Nothing from the investigation or even their decision in writing. They’ve advised that the file is still "open", so they can’t give any documents. But charges have been declined so the family is left with more unanswered questions and no closure. The Meckelberg County Medical Examiner released an unredacted copy of their autopsy to the media. The FBI and the medical examiner on whom the FBI is relying to decline charges are on two different pages.
The FBI is saying they can’t release any documents, even to the family. At the same time, the medical examiner is releasing unredacted autopsy documents to the press. These are the kinds of red flags that cause us concern."

While it is discouraging for the loved ones of Shanquella that the U.S. authorities will not be pursuing charges against Shanquella's aggressor, justice is still possible for her death. Mexican prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant in this case and have sent extradition documents to the United States. Her family and their supporters will be in Washington on May 19th, urging the White House and State Department to prioritize facilitating the extradition of those responsible for her death to Mexico to face accountability there by giving this case the high level diplomatic intervention it needs.
