Benjamin Crump And Sue-Ann Robinson Join The South Florida Legal Community Tomorrow In Urging President Biden To Appoint A Black Woman To The Local Federal Bench

In the 176-year history of the Southern District of Florida's United States District Court, the Hon. Marcia Cooke is the only Black woman to hold the position of district court judge. After being chosen in 2004, Judge Cooke became the first and only Black woman to preside over a district court in the Southern District. She passed away earlier this year, making South Florida's district courts without a single Black woman judge.

President Biden has appointed historically significant Black women to the federal bench who are qualified judges. The federal judiciary should reflect the communities it serves, according to the president and his administration. However, according to multiple local reports, none of the four vacant or soon-to-be vacant federal judgeships in South Florida are currently expected to be appointed by a Black woman. This is especially alarming in light of the nomination of three qualified Black women for the bench by judicial nomination commissions chaired by Democrats and Republicans.
